Trophy Hunting: Should People Be Allowed To Hunt Exotic Animals Like Lions In Africa?

In my opinion, hunting exotic animals such as lions should be prohibited to conserve population of endangered species and to protect the rights of animals. [1] According to Savetherhino.com, trophy hunting is defined as " a specific and selective legal form of wildlife use that involves payment for a hunting experience and the acquisition of a trophy by the hunter and is only allowed under strict permit conditions". In these days, there is on-going controversy on trophy hunting whether can be justified. Those who hunt exotic animals in Africa pay a great amount of money in order to hunt exotic animals. On the other hand, many ecologists attempt to save the endangered species to balance the ecosystem. The problem is that the influence of trophy hunting impacts on significant decline in population of many exotic species. Why does trophy hunting affect to the significant drops in population of exotic animals despite of the strict permit conditions? First of all, the permit on trophy hunting is being abused, so the effort of conservation on endangered species would be collapsed. [2] Originally, the purpose of legal trophy hunting is to raise money for conservation efforts, according to National Geographic, and it is only allowed in some African countries such as Zimbabwe and South Africa. However, animals living in the National Park are banned to hunt even in Zimbabwe and South Africa. [3] According to Wikipedia, the lion Cecil, a major attraction at the park and was being studied and tracked by the University of Oxford as part of a larger study since 1999, was wounded with an arrow by a big game hunter, Walter Palmer, and approximately 40 hours later, killed with a rifle outside of the park. In fact, Walter Palmer intended to draw out Cecil to outside of the National Park, but he denied that the killing Cecil is not an illegal act because he paid $50,000 and Cecil was not killed in the park. Of course, the rule of trophy hunting is very confusing that only animals roaming in the National Park can be protected; however, this doesn’t mean that trophy hunts can be justified. [2]According to National Geographic, when a dominant male lion is killed, another male will take his place at the head of the pride. Typically, he will kill any existing cubs, in order to make room for his own offspring. Cecil had an estimated 24 cubs among six lionesses. This also tells that trophy hunting can significantly affect to the drops in population of lions (endangered species). Second, animals are not tools that humans like to play with. Animals are living beings that have own rights of their lives. Humans cannot violate the rights of their lives for selfishness. Some people tend to like to show off their unique experiences to others and feel catharsis on killing exotic animals. In the case of Cecil, Walter Palmer shot Cecil with the arrow and left for 40 hours. This tells how much he was so brutal that Cecil suffered from the wound for approximately 2 days and was finally killed with a gun. In my understanding, his intent on leaving wounded Ceil for 40 hours is not acceptable. It is inevitable to make the judgment that he definitely enjoyed having fun on watching Cecil’s death. [4] According to Keith Taylor, Green party MEP for south-east England, said, “It’s outrageous that lions are being killed just so someone in Europe can decorate their home with the body parts.” This tells how much the result of sacrifice is meaningless and the human beings are cruel to animals. [2] Moreover, according to National Geographic, skins, bones, and other materials resulting from a hunt can find their way into the black market, where they fuel demand in Asia for traditional cures or status symbols. This tells that dead bodies of exotic animals would go to the illegal black market for edible purpose as well. For these two reasons, exotic animals like lions are not belongings to humans and should be protected for the sustainability of the species.

The Process of Obtaining My Knowledge Ownership

I’ve learned so many things in English Writings 2 class so that my knowledge in English writing has resulted in improvement. One of the acquirements in knowledge is citation. My professor, Gary went over so many lectures about citation in class and after class, and has always pointed out to include citations as APA format. I never experienced citing sources with APA format, so it took me a lot of time to figure about. Although I used the citation machine and tried to clarify where the sources came from, some sources were uncertain that I could rarely find information about the sources. Therefore, I had to look up Goolge and to study by my own to be clear with APA format. From now on, I am quite brilliant at utilizing APA format while citing and can confidently say aloud that I could apply the knowledge to other writings besides blog posts. At first, I wasn’t sure why Gary emphasizes having citations is so important and actually disliked spending so much time in explaining the importance of citations. However, after I posted several writings on my blog, I realized that having citations makes my writings more professional and credible. Moreover, credibility of source makes my writings reliable, and the support of my thesis is much stronger. More citations makes increase in reliability and helped me to shape my supporting sentences as well. I think, because of the importance, Gary talked about credibility of sources throughout two class periods, and I clearly understood why the citation is crucial in order to perfect my writings. In brief, I became acknowledged with the importance of citation, and I believe the knowledge is about to start to be embedded in my blog posts.

How do comments affect to improve my writings?

The comments others have posted on my blog are not helpful to improve my writings for two reasons. First, people rarely leave comments on my writings. Because I could hardly find comments on my writings, I don’t have any chance to find my grammatical or structural faults in my writings. I believe that more feedbacks would make my writings rich and profound. I definitely look forward to receiving more feedbacks and concerns about my writings, so I could have a gist to decide whether my writings are on right track or not. Second, most of comments people left on my blogs do not talk about which part of my writings sounds awkward. I would like to be clear with ambiguousness in my writings and want to hear thoughtful comments that I can actually reflect on my writings. Instead of showing concerns about the contents of my writings, I prefer to have more comments on my structure of writings.

The comments I have posted on other blogs are helpful to improve both of my writings and writing skills for two reasons. First of all, if I find some grammatical or structural mistakes on others’ blogs, I go back to my blog and check whether I made the same mistakes as the writer did. For example, when I suggested not to start with FANBOYS in a sentence, I also double-checked to see if I started with FANBOYS. Particularly, leaving comments about grammatical mistakes help me to take a look at my grammatical mistakes. Second, I can learn dos and don’ts in writings. For instances, if I read others’ well-written paragraphs, I get motivated to make my writings better and attempt to apply the good aspects of their writings. This eventually leads to improvement of my writings.

In brief, leaving comments on others’ blogs are helpful to improve my writings and writings skills, but comments others posted on my blogs are not really helpful to improve my writings.

          Global English class helps students to be prepared for their future career for two reasons. First of all, Global English class allows students to experience a real-life practice as job seekers. For example, the class makes students find two actual job advertisements that students want to apply for the most. This helps students to think deeply regarding their future career field. Then students discuss with the professor to decide which job advertisement is the most appealing. After making decisions, the job interview sessions are progressed. Students prepare for the job interview as an actual job seeker, and the professor is expected to be a recruiter of the company where the students are likely to apply for. The students and the professor play the roles as interviewee and interviewer and take a rehearsal in order to be successfully prepared. Through the six weeks of the drills, students will learn the interview skills and dos and don’ts in the job interview. According to a syllabus of Global English 2, the course is aimed to assist students in further acquiring the necessary English verbal skills required to successfully obtain employment or internships in Korea, particularly in relations to the English job interview component of the hiring process for many Korean companies.¹ Second, a professor guides students to make their individual job portfolios in English. For instance, students in the class spend time in writing a resume and a cover letter. The students will learn the proper way of writing a resume and a cover letter in English, particularly formats and general tips. In the class of writing a resume, the guidelines are given by the professor to be tailored for a prospective employer. In the class of writing a cover letter, the professor points out key elements students should have in their cover letters. Kept the techniques of writing in mind, students start to write their own resumes and cover letters. Then a professor thoroughly reviews and offers writing tutorial service to students. Indeed, Global English class assists students to be completely prepared for their prospective careers because of its real-life practice as a job seeker and job portfolios reviewed by a professor.

 My Own Peaceful Place: Café Hafoom

The café, Hafoom is nice and cozy to sit around for a whole day. It is such a small café that only 8 tables are available, and I could hardly find people in the café during weekends. The café is located in Gongneung-dong which is an hour away from the downtown of Seoul, so I can easily access to the place with ten minutes-walk. On the first floor, the entrance of the café is very neat and organized; a wide open space and a clear door make the place spacious. A coffee machine and a blender are arranged in a line on the shelf. Above the shelf, the hand-written menu is clearly shown in a black board. Rectangular tables are neatly lined up with lamps attached on the wall, and I used to do my works all day long on the table with the light. Right next to the tables, the wooden antique chairs are lined along the tables. On the way up, there is a five meter long wooden stairs connecting the first floor and the second floor. On the second floor, comfortable one meter long sofas are positioned right next to the big wide window and takes me to fall asleep for a while. In short, the café Hafoom is a great place to relax and chill out as well as to help me to concentrate on working my stuffs.

Blog Post #1: How does where I live (have lived) influence how I live?

Seoul has influenced convenience in my lifestyle for two reasons. First of all, the transportation system of Seoul is well-structured with easy access. For example, I don't need to pay double when I transfer from a bus to a subway in 30 minutes and vice versa. Because Seoul charges with the moving distance, the system automatically recognizes the distance and the time that I get on and off. Also, I can easily find the stations closely located near my house, even the suburbs of Seoul. Second, Seoul is very technology-oriented. For instance, I can easily approach to free Wi-Fi zones anywhere in Seoul. Back in 2010, I had to deal with free Wi-Fi for a couple weeks. However, I could find nothing inconvenient to use Internet with my phone. Seoul offers not even free Wi-Fi but also good quality of technology based systems such as the electronic display that informs you when the bus is going to arrive. In brief, Seoul offers easy access of transportation and good quality of technology everywhere.
